Discipleship:
Objective:  Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence.  
Start your homeschool day with prayer and Bible reading.  Our Character Virtue of the month is Faith.
Who is your hero of faith?  They could be a biblical character, a family member, or someone else famous. What is faith?  Read Hebrews 11 this week.

Math:
Continue doing a 5 min warm-up with the assigned Math fact sheet.  If your child has mastered the current fact sheet, move on the next one.
Work through Mental Math 8 this week.
Objectives:
1. Multiply by a ten
2. Multiply tens, hundreds, and thousands with each other.
3. Multiply a 2-digit and 3-digit number by a 2-digit number.
4. Practice concepts involving multiplication and division
Bar Modeling: Bar modeling is a key component of problem solving. We will now do a practice "Bar Model of the Day" each day at school along with our normal math facts and mental math warm-ups.  If you have not watched the bar model training videos on the blog under resources, they will be beneficial in assisting your student.
Please complete all the work assigned for home days, including workbook and practice exercises, as well as math facts practice. Please grade all work by first indicating which answers are incorrect and then giving your student an opportunity to correct his/her mistakes before offering assistance.

Composition
Objectives:
1. Write a KWO from a source text and retell using only KWO
2. Learn new vocabulary and incorporate it into writing
3. Write a RD using only KWO and composition checklist.

Reading  
Objectives: Spend 30-40 min of independent reading per day
We will complete our discussion of The Perilous Journey this week. Begin reading a classical book of your choice this week.

Grammar
Objectives:
1. Identify prepositions, objects of the preposition and prepositional phrases in sentences.
2. Know the structure of a 3-point paragraph.
Continue to review jingles 1-6, this week adding 7-9.

Spelling
Objectives:
1. Review 71 phonograms
2. Assess mastery of Single Letter Phonograms

Please administer the Classical Phonics Assessment this week and return to school on Monday.  You only need to do Assessment 1 (Single Letter Phonograms) at this point. Here are instructions for administering the assessment.
Phonogram Drill Form (written portion) - Parents, read the sound or sounds on the card. Or if you prefer, you can play the sound on the AAS app.  Your student should then write the corresponding phonogram in the box. Mark any your child missed.
Classical Phonics Assessment Tracker (oral portion) - Show the card to the student. He or she should be able to correctly identify all the sounds associated with that card. Please note any phonograms your child missed on the form.

Latin
Objectives:
1. Review all previously learned vocabulary.
2. Learn Latin derivatives  
Listen to Latin chants daily to aid in memorization.

History
Objectives:
1. Understand how newspaper owners used “yellow journalism” and artwork by Frederic Remington to stir up sentiment against Spain.
2. Know that Theodore Roosevelt helped the US gain a decisive victory in the Spanish-American War in 1898.
3. Create memory pegs by memorizing key people, events, locations and dates throughout the course of world history.

Science
Objective:  Read a biography of a scientist

Note: Students will be researching a scientist over the next few weeks.  Students can purchase a book, or get a book from their local library and begin reading it this week with a goal of completing your reading next week.  Here is the schedule so you can plan ahead:

Week of 9/5 – 9/8 : Students read a short biography book of a scientist.
Here are a few of the scientists they could choose from:
·         Isaac Newton—founded the laws of gravity and motion
·         Thomas Edison—American inventor
·         Albert Einstein—E=mc², plus many other theories
·         Niels Bohr—applied quantum theory of physics to the structure of the atom
·         William Gilbert—English physicist who founded the study of magnetism
·         Lord Kelvin (William Thomson)—established the absolute temperature scale
Week of 9/11 – 9/15: Students complete reading (9/12), and begin answering the following questions on a questionnaire:
·         Who was the scientist you read about?
·         When and where were they born?
·         What was their major scientific contribution?
·         List the events that surrounded their discovery
·         List some other interesting events in the scientist’s life.
·         Why do you think it is important to learn about this scientist?
Week of 9/18 – 9/22 Students continue answering questions
Week of 9/25 – 9/29 Students begin writing a rough draft of their biography report
Week of 10/2 – 10/6 Students continue writing rough draft
Week of 10/9 – 10/12 Students will write a final draft, or make a mini-book, or make a board presentation of their report.

Memory Work:  Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.
