Please circle errors in red pen and have students make corrections to the side. Return it to school for grading/scoring. You may read the Q&A flow from the teacher's manual to help students classify the sentences on this first test. Also feel free to answer questions any about the instructions, but please don't help your kids with the answers. 4. Choose a scientist to study

Your student will be making their own dictionary of terms through the course of this study.  Most definitions can be found in the Usborne Science Encyclopedia's glossary, all are in the readings.  It's up to you how you want your student to obtain the definition: you can choose to dictate the definition or you can have them look up the terms in a dictionary.  They are to write out each definition on the vocabulary page of their science journal.
Here are this week's terms.  These are a guide.  Your student's definitions don't need to be word for word.
Density:  a measure of the amount of matter in a substance compared to its volume
Surface Tension: a force that pulls together molecules on the surface of a liquid

Note: Students will be researching a scientist over the next few weeks.  Students can purchase a book, or get a book from their local library and begin reading it next week.  We are taking it very slowing and incrementally.  Here is the schedule so you can plan ahead:

Week of 9/5 – 9/8 : Students read a short biography book of a scientist.
Here are a few of the scientists they could choose from:
·         Isaac Newton—founded the laws of gravity and motion
·         Thomas Edison—American inventor
·         Albert Einstein—E=mc², plus many other theories
·         Niels Bohr—applied quantum theory of physics to the structure of the atom
·         William Gilbert—English physicist who founded the study of magnetism
·         Lord Kelvin (William Thomson)—established the absolute temperature scale
Week of 9/11 – 9/15: Students complete reading (9/12), and begin answering the following questions on a questionnaire:
·         Who was the scientist you read about?
·         When and where were they born?
·         What was their major scientific contribution?
·         List the events that surrounded their discovery
·         List some other interesting events in the scientist’s life.
·         Why do you think it is important to learn about this scientist?
Week of 9/18 – 9/22 Students continue answering questions
Week of 9/25 – 9/29 Students begin writing a rough draft of their biography report
Week of 10/2 – 10/6 Students continue writing rough draft
Week of 10/9 – 10/12 Students will write a final draft, or make a mini-book, or make a board presentation of their report.
