Welcome 4th grade Falcons!

I am excited to start the year, and hope you are as well.  We are diving into the year's work quickly and have much to discuss in the way of procedures and introductions to each piece of curriculum this week.  Don't be dismayed when "kinks" arise in class or at home; it will take a couple weeks to get into a rhythm.  Praise God for His grace!  For those of you new to Fortis, each week you will find a table on the blog, as above, that lists the week's work for campus and home.  Below the table you will find notes with additional information for each piece of curriculum including specific weekly objectives for each subject.  Helpful links to resources we use in class, or what you need at home will be in this section as well.

God bless us as we all get started!  And may He be glorified by all we do!

Mrs. Johnson

Coming Soon:

Monday, August 28 - Open House, 6-7 p.m.
Wednesday, August 30 - Pizza Day. Students may wear Fortis spirit shirts with uniform bottoms.
Monday, September 4 - Labor Day. NO SCHOOL!
Wednesday, September 6 - Picture Day

Discipleship:
Objective:  Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence.

Start your home school day with prayer and Bible reading.  Our Character Virtue of the month is Love.
What are some ways God shows love to us? What is love?  Read John 13:34, 1 John 3:18 & Col 3:12-13.  We want to be Christ-like.  What are some ways we can show love and kindness to our family/friends?  Classmates? School/church/community/world?

Math
Objectives:
1. Read & write a 5-digit number.
2. Relate each digit up to 100,000 to its place value.
3. Add, subtract, multiply and divide thousands and ten thousands.
4. Round off whole numbers to the nearest 10.
5. Determine the scale of a number line.

***Please complete all the work assigned for home days, including workbook and practice exercises, as well as math facts practice.
Practice Exercises: All practice exercises should be completed on notebook paper and filed behind the math tab. Co-teachers, please check these and have students make corrections.

Also, please do 5-10 minutes of mental math each home day as a warm-up.  Don't strive to finish all problems in this time.  A third or half is acceptable.  We will be using the Mental Math pages multiple times on campus and at home.  The goal is to be able to calculate answers mentally.  (Start this week doing Mental Math 1 found in the HIG Appendix)  On Thursday,  start the day reviewing the concept taught Wed. using the concrete manipulatives, before moving on to the workbook exercise.

Reading
Objectives:
1. Learn about the life a soldier during the Civil War.
2. Engage in discussion, sharing ideas, meaning, & information from the reading.
3. Write a reading narration using rubric.

We will begin reading Perilous Road this week.   We will read aloud in class on Monday and review how to write a narration in class on Wednesday.
Grammar
Objectives:
1. Know the definitions of Synonym & Antonym.
2. Learn how to use "a" and "an" correctly.

History
Objectives:
1. Identify factors that led to the War Between the States.
2. Identify key figures of the war.

Science
Objectives:
1. Name three states of matter.
2. Know that a gas is a substance that has no definite volume or shape.
3. Know which weighs more: hot air or cold air

Your student will be making their own dictionary of terms through the course of this study.  Most definitions can be found in the Usborne Science Encylopedia's glossary, all are in the readings.  It's up to you how you want your student to obtain the definition: you can choose to dictate the definition or you can have them look up the terms in a dictionary.  They are to write out each definition on the vocabulary page of their science journal.
Here are this week's terms.  These are a guide.  Your student's definitions don't need to be word for word.
State of matter: the different forms in which a substance can exist: solid, liquid, and gas
Gas: the state of matter in which a substance has no fixed shape or volume

Memory Work:  Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.

Poetry:  Our first quarter poem is "The Father's Vineyard".  A copy was placed in your student's binder on Monday.  Practice this with a family member, pet, or stuffed animal as an audience, focusing on the public speaking skills listed in IEW on pg. 9.  If you really want a challenge, try using yourself as an audience in a mirror! Additional copies here.

History Timeline:
You can find the timeline song here.
Lyrics and hand motions to accompany the timeline song :Classical Conversation History Card timeline-motions.

Geography:  We will begin our study of geography this week through "blob mapping" the oceans and continents.   Here is a short video that demonstrates blobbing of a world map. (This is part one of a four-part video series, which you should be able to easily find if you have watched part one.)

Continents & Oceans song and map can be found here on the main blog curricula/geography page. Students will be responsible for labeling continents and oceans on a map.
