Welcome 4th grade Falcons!

I am excited to start the year, and hope you are as well.  We are diving into the year's work quickly and have much to discuss in the way of procedures and introductions to each piece of curriculum this week.  Don't be dismayed when "kinks" arise in class or at home; it will take a couple weeks to get into a rhythm.  Praise God for His grace!  For those of you new to Fortis (and this blog), each week you will find a table, as above, that lists the week's work for campus and home.  Below the table, we will normally have a list of upcoming "important dates" to keep in mind.   And below that, you will find notes for each piece of curriculum including our specific weekly objectives for each subject.  Helpful links to resources we use in class, or what you need at home will be in this section as well.

God bless us as we all get started!  And may He be glorified by all we do!

Mrs. Johnson

Discipleship:
Objective:  Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence.
Start your home school day with prayer and Bible reading.  Our Character Virtue of the month is Love.  Read 1 John 3:18,  1 John 4:12, Romans 12:10 and Romans 13:8.

Math
Objectives:
1. Read & write a 5-digit number.
2. Relate each digit up to 100,000 to its place value.
3. Add, subtract, multiply and divide thousands and ten thousands.
4. Round off whole numbers to the nearest 10.
5. Determine the scale of a number line.

Optional Math Buddies: Whole Numbers to 100,000
***Please complete all the work assigned for home days, including workbook and practice exercises, as well as math facts practice.
Practice Exercises: All practice exercises should be completed on notebook paper and filed behind the math tab. Co-teachers, please check these and have students make corrections.
Math Facts: Before you begin, please make sure you have made copies of the math facts sheets using the masters we sent home with the syllabus. Students have five minutes to complete each fact practice page. Please set the timer and record the time it takes your child to finish (if less than five minutes). If your child is unable to complete the page in five minutes, please mark on the paper how far he/she got, and then have him/her finish the page without a timer. The goal is to see improvement with regular practice.
Math Buddies: This interactive web site has supplemental activities and information that are compatible with our Singapore Primary Mathematics books. We encourage you to regularly use this web site to help you better understand how to teach a lesson or concept and to provide opportunities for your child to practice new skills:

Also, please do 5-10 minutes of mental math each home day as a warm-up.  Don't strive to finish all problems in this time.  A third or half is acceptable.  We will be using the Mental Math pages multiple times on campus and at home.  The goal is to be able to calculate answers mentally.  (Start this week doing Mental Math 1 found in the HIG Appendix)  On Thursday,  start the day reviewing the concept taught Wed. using the concrete manipulatives, before moving on to the workbook exercise.

Reading
Objectives:
1. Learn about life in the New England wilderness.
2. Engage in discussion, sharing ideas, meaning, & information from the reading.
3. Write a reading narration using rubric.

We will begin reading The Sign of the Beaver this week.   We will read aloud in class on Monday and review how to write a narration in class on Wednesday.  There are no additional written narrations for this week.  Starting next week, students will write a short narration on their weekly reading at home using this form.  Reading

Grammar
Objectives:
1. Know the definitions of Synonym & Antonym.
2. Learn how to use "a" and "an" correctly.

History
Objectives:
1. Know that Bach and Handel were composers who wrote sacred music, and be familiar with some of their works.
Review the Timeline Figure Schedule sent home in the binder on Monday.  Please mark your calendar for the dates when your student needs to present a timeline character.  Students who are due to create a timeline figure will be listed in red in the above table after the lesson number. They will show the class the figure, tell  2-3 important points about the lesson, and place their figure on the classroom timeline. This is a fun, informal way for them to practice public speaking skills.
Timeline Figure Template

Have your student orally narrate to you what they read in the history lessons this week.  Review the history narration form.   Starting next week, they will choose one of the three lessons on which to write a written narration. Please print a supply of the narration forms so they will be ready to go. History Narrations

You will notice that throughout the year some lessons are listed on the blog as optional. Because this year’s history lessons are longer and more complex than those in the previous volumes, we knew it would be difficult to fit them all into the reading schedule, so we wanted to focus our time and attention on certain lessons. When choosing which lessons to make optional, we considered one or more of the following factors: the age appropriateness of the material, the controversial nature of the subject, and/or the relative significance of the figure or event to world history. We encourage you to preview the optional lessons to see if they are appropriate for your child and study them at your leisure.

Science
Objectives:
1.  Introduction to chemistry & physics.
2. Understand the meaning of "volume".

As you read through the science book this year, you will likely find "Take time to tell in your own words..." in purple script.  Please answer these questions orally to solidify what you read or heard read.  At the end of each lesson, there will be a list of What Do You Remember questions.  Students are to take any two and answer them on paper in complete sentences.   These should be kept in the campus binder behind the science tab.  These will periodically be checked for completion.

Memory Work:  Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.

Scripture:  We will be memorizing Proverbs 3:1-23 over the course of this year.  A copy of the passage was placed in your student's binder on Monday.  Additional copies may be found here.

Poetry:  Our first quarter poem is "The Father's Vineyard".  A copy was placed in your student's binder on Monday.  Practice this with a family member, pet, or stuffed animal as an audience, focusing on the public speaking skills listed in IEW on pg. 9.  If you really want a challenge, try using yourself as an audience in a mirror! Additional copies here.

History Key Dates:  This year, we'll review all of the key dates from the previous three volumes of Mystery of History, but we'll only test over the twelve new dates. We won't add the new dates to the study list until after we've read and taught the lesson. Please have your student review the dates for dates 1-6 from Volume 1, beginning with Abraham.

Geography:  We will begin our study of geography this week through "blob mapping" the oceans and continents.   Here is a short video that demonstrates blobbing of a world map. (This is part one of a four-part video series, which you should be able to easily find if you have watched part one.)

Continents & Oceans song and map can be found here on the main blog curricula/geography page. Students will be responsible for labeling continents and oceans on a map.
