Discipleship:
Objective: Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence.
Our Character Virtue of the month is: Love (Compassion). Start your home school day with prayer and Bible reading. What is compassion? Did Jesus have it? Does He ask His people to have it? Try a quick word search of "compassion" on a Bible website and see how many times it appears in Scripture.
Math
Objectives:
1. Round off whole numbers to the nearest 100.
2. Estimate the answers in addition and subtraction of large numbers.
3. Practice concepts involving place value and rounding.
4. Understand factors using rectangular arrays.
Please complete all the work assigned for home days, including textbook practice exercises, workbook exercises and math facts practice sheets.
Math Facts: Start each day with a 5 min warm up using the Math Facts Practice sheets. Please make copies of the math facts sheets using the masters sent home with the syllabus. Students have five minutes to complete each fact practice page. Please set the timer and record the time it takes your child to finish (if less than five minutes).
Mental Math: Continue your warm up with 5 minutes of Mental Math. This week work through Mental Math 3 & 4 in the HIG appendix.
Textbook Learning Tasks Exercises: All Learning Tasks exercises should be completed on notebook paper and filed behind the math tab. Co-teachers, please check these and have students make any necessary corrections.
Workbook Exercises: Please check these daily and have students make corrections.

Have your student choose one of the two lessons this week and write a narration using the narration form. We will review how to write a narration in class, but they may need a reminder to include the who, what, when, where, and why the event is important. It doesn't have to be long, three to five sentences is sufficient. Co-Teachers, please score in red pen using the rubric and return to school Monday in your child's front binder pocket.
Students who are due to create a timeline figure are listed in red in the above table after the lesson number. The following class day, they will show the class the figure, tell 2-3 important points about the lesson, and place their figure on the classroom timeline.
You will notice that throughout the year some lessons are listed on the blog as optional. Because this year’s history lessons are longer and more complex than those in the previous volumes, we knew it would be difficult to fit them all into the reading schedule, so we wanted to focus our time and attention on certain lessons. When choosing which lessons to make optional, we considered one or more of the following factors: the age appropriateness of the material, the controversial nature of the subject, and/or the relative significance of the figure or event to world history. We encourage you to preview the optional lessons to see if they are appropriate for your child and study them at your leisure.
Science
Objectives:
1. Understand concepts of mass, volume, and density.

As you read through the science book this year, you will likely find "Take time to tell in your own words..." in purple script. Please answer these questions orally to solidify what you read or heard read. At the end of each lesson, there will be a list of What Do You Remember questions. Students are to take any two and answer them on paper in complete sentences. These should be kept in the campus binder behind the science tab. These will periodically be checked for completion.
Memory Work: Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.
Scripture: We will be memorizing Proverbs 3:1-23 over the course of this year. A copy of the passage was placed in your student's binder on Monday. Additional copies may be found here.
Poetry: Our first quarter poem is "The Father's Vineyard" to be recited on 10/3. Additional copies here.
Key Dates 1-12 Flashcards
Geography: We will begin our study of geography this week through "blob mapping" the oceans and continents. Here is a short video that demonstrates blobbing of a world map. (This is part one of a four-part video series, which you should be able to easily find if you have watched part one.)
Continents & Oceans song and map can be found here on the main blog curricula/geography page. Students will be responsible for labeling continents and oceans on a map.

We won't add the new dates to the study list until after we've read and taught the lesson. Please have your student review the dates for dates 1-9 from Volume 1, beginning with Abraham.
