Math Please work through Mental Math 8 this week.
Objectives:
1. Divide a decimal number by a 1-digit number where decimal places have to be added to the dividend.
2. Estimate to check whether an answer is reasonable.
3. Round the quotient in a division problem to 1-decimal place.
4. Practice previously learned skills, reteaching where necessary.
5. Assess decimal skills
6. Solve word problems involving division of decimal numbers.
Note: This assignment is for practice and assessment. Your student does not need to complete every single problem in this review if he/she demonstrates
mastery of the skill. You be the judge of how much practice your child needs. Skip or reteach areas as needed.

Science
Objectives:
1. Know that electricity produces magnetism.
2. Identify uses of magnets and electromagnets
3. Know that electricity is a form of energy that can be easily converted to other forms of energy, and transported along cables to provide power.
Definitions:
Magnets-an object that attracts iron or steel and other alloys
Pole-either of the two points on a magnet where the force of attraction or repulsion is strongest
Electromagnetism-the effect that takes place when an electric current flows through a wire, forming a magnetic field.
Electricity-the effect caused by the presence or movement of electrically charged particles
Note: Students will be researching a scientist over the next few weeks. Students can purchase a book, or get a book from their local library and begin
reading it next week or the week after spring break.
Week of 3/18: Students read a short biography book of a scientist such as Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? by Margaret Frith
Here are a few scientists from which to choose. There are many others.
· Isaac Newton—founded the laws of gravity and motion
· Thomas Edison—American inventor
· Albert Einstein—E=mc², plus many other theories
· Niels Bohr—applied quantum theory of physics to the structure of the atom
· William Gilbert—English physicist who founded the study of magnetism
· Lord Kelvin (William Thomson)—established the absolute temperature scale
Week of 3/25 Students complete reading, and begin answering the following questions on a questionnaire:
· Who was the scientist you read about?
· When and where were they born?
· What was their major scientific contribution?
· List the events that surrounded their discovery
· List some other interesting events in the scientist’s life.
Memory Work: Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.
