Objective: 
Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence. Start your homeschool day with prayer and Bible reading. Our virtue this month is Justice. Justice is the cardinal virtue that consists of the constant and firm will to give what is due to God and neighbor. Fruit of the Spirit: Kindness - meets the needs of others and avoids harshness.

Math

Note: Start each day with a facts practice warm-up sheet. Do whichever page your child is currently working on or needs help for memorization. Set the timer for 5 minutes. Optional: Fill in ones you didn't get and return to school for an extra credit participation grade. (Two sheets due per week for extra credit.)


Objectives:

1. Add, subtract, and multiply metric units of measurement

2. Express inches, feet, yards, and miles in compound units and single units.

3. Express ounces and pounds in compound units and single units.

4. Express gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and ounces in compound units and single units.

5. Express measurements of time in compound units and single units.

6. Multiply time expressed in compound units.


Spelling

Objective: Review four patterns for making words plural.


Reading  

Please bring your book to class each day.

Objectives: 

1. Engage in meaningful Socratic dialogue.
2. Summarize a passage. 
3. Identify virtues in characters in Number the Stars.

4. Identify personification in a passage. 

5. Make predictions concerning the plot.


Grammar

Objective:

1. Know that Personal Pronouns and Antecedents must agree in number and gender.

Writing 

Objectives:

1. Introduce Unit 6: Summarizing multiple references.
2. Create outlines from two source texts.
3. Create a fused outline.
4. Write a #2 opener sentence that begins with a prepositional phrase.
5.Write a 1-paragraph RD from a fused outline.

History 

Objectives: 

1. Know that world leaders met in Versailles and formed the League of Nations in an attempt to ensure peace after WWI. 
2. Know that Mohandas Gandhi promoted nonviolent resistance to British rule in India.
3. Know that under Joseph Stalin, Russia became the USSR and millions of Russians died. 

Science

1. Experiment with air.
2. Experiment with air pressure.

3. Know that the shape of bird wings gives them the ability to lift off the ground. 

4. Correctly color birds in order to make a field guide.


Memory Work:  Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work:

Poetry:  Our third quarter poem is "In Christ Alone." These lyrics are set to music and you can find numerous renditions online. Here is one. In Christ Alone. Additional copies here.

Geography:  We are continuing our study of Eastern Europe this week. The song and map can be found here on the main blog curricula/geography page. Students will be responsible for labeling countries on a map. A word bank is provided. Sheppard's software practice game: Eastern Europe

History: We are beginning our memorization of the US Presidents. There are several YouTube video songs to help

with this. Here are two: US Presidents to "America" and US PresidentsFor assessment, students will write or sing all the presidents' first and last names. (Due 5/12)

If you would like your child to participate, please send a wrapped new or gently used classical, age-appropriate book. You may want to specify if the book would appeal more to boys or girls, but it is not necessary. 

Discipleship: 

Objective:  Experience the joy of the Lord which comes from spending time in His presence.

Start your homeschool day with prayer and Bible reading. This month's virtue is Temperance. Temperance is the cardinal virtue that moderates (not destroys) the attraction to pleasure and provides balance in the use of created goods. Fruit of the Spirit: Self-control. Self-control is the mastery of love of and desire for pleasure.


Math

Continue to complete a Facts Practice worksheet or quiz your student with flashcards each day if not mastered. You do not have to turn them in anymore.

Objectives:

1. Interpret change over time in bar and line graphs.

2. Draw and display data in a line graph.

3. Interpret and create line plots.

4. Practice and review.


Spelling

Objective:
1. Spell more words with the sound of /z/ spelled s.
2. Review and assess phonograms.

Please administer the Classical Phonics Assessment (in binder) this week and return to school Tuesday.  
You only need to do Assessment 2. Here are instructions for administering the assessment.
Phonogram Drill Form (written portion) - Parents, read the sound or sounds on the card. Or if you prefer, you can play the sound on the AAS app. Your student should then write the corresponding phonogram in the box. Mark any your child missed.
Classical Phonics Assessment Tracker (oral portion) - Show the card to the student. He or she should be able to correctly identify all the sounds associated with that card. Please note any phonograms your child missed on the form.

Reading  

Objective: Identify goodness, truth, and beauty in biographical literature.


Grammar

Objectives: Practice editing skills.


Writing 

Objectives:

1. Complete FD of a story written from pictures.

2. Recite 2nd quarter poem.


History 

Objectives: 

1. Know that Russia's economic collapse led to the Bolshevik Revolution, which forced the Czar out of power.
2. Know that the Bolshevik leader, Vladimir Lenin, became a brutal dictator.
3. Understand that Lenin established the USSR and ruled over it until his death in 1924.
4. Know that WW I ended in 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. 

Science
Objectives: 
1. Research and record facts on a variety of insects.
2. Assessment.
