Math:  
We'll be finishing up Singapore 4A this week by looking at composite figures made of rectangles and squares.  Students will learn how find the area and perimeter of a composite figure.  They will also be given some of the lengths and may have to find missing lengths before they can find the perimeter or area.  Friday will begin our review of concepts learned thus far in preparation for the test on Dec. 7.  
 
Math Facts: Start each day with a 5 min warm up using the  Math Facts Practice sheets.  Please continue doing facts practice sheets daily at home until all facts are completely mastered.
Mental Math: Continue your warm up with 5 minutes of Mental Math. This week work through any of MM1- 18  in the HIG appendix.

Workbook Exercises: Please check these daily and have students make corrections.

We're starting Unit 4: Summarizing a Reference which teaches the important skills of how to limit details and how to organize a cohesive paragraph.  Students will be reading a source text and create an outline by choosing facts which interest them.

Geography:  This week we introduce Mexico.   The song for Mexico covers seven states, but the map your child received covers all the states in Mexico.  There is no song for this map. Fourth graders will be responsible for memorizing the states that border the USA, the state that includes the capital city, and those states on the Yucatan Peninsula, a frequently-visited area of Mexico that is considered to be part of the Caribbean. These are the states they will need to know for the test on January 25:

I hope you have a terrific week off and a wonderful Thanksgiving with plenty of food, family, and fellowship.  We all have so much to be thankful for, and I am especially thankful for the awesome privilege I have to partner with each of you, to teach and disciple your precious children.  May the Lord bless each of you with rest and refreshment over the break!

If you don't have plans for next weekend there is a great opportunity for a fun and educational field trip at the Liendo Plantation in Hempstead, TX.  You can step back in time for an up close and personal look at life during the period of the American Civil War.  Held annually the weekend before Thanksgiving, Civil War Weekend is an event with period life demonstrations, activities, and Civil War reenactors and historians who portray the many sides of life during a war that divided our nation. This week we will read and discuss the book,  How We Crossed the West: The Adventures of Lewis & Clark, so be sure to bring it to class each day.  There is no written narration due, however please have your child give you an oral narration of their reading each day.  We will begin Freedom Train next week.

Grammar
We'll be talking about editing this week.  Please challenge your students to edit their writing.  When they write narrations or paragraphs, if you see spelling or punctuation errors, use it as a teaching opportunity.  Challenge them to find a few spelling errors or missing punctuation, and help them to make corrections.  This is a great opportunity to review or reinforce spelling rules and help them learn correct punctuation in a very practical way.

History
Students will continue working on a Civil War lapbook or presentation board instead of writing a history narration this week and next. Projects due 11/16.  More information can be found here.
