Dear 4th Grade Families,
I hope you have a terrific week off and a wonderful Thanksgiving with plenty of food, family, and fellowship. We all have so much to be thankful for, and I am especially thankful for the awesome privilege I have to partner with each of you, to teach and disciple your precious children. May the Lord bless each of you with rest and refreshment over the break!
If you don't have plans for next weekend there is a great opportunity for a fun and educational field trip at the Liendo Plantation in Hempstead, TX. You can step back in time for an up close and personal look at life during the period of the American Civil War. Held annually the weekend before Thanksgiving, Civil War Weekend is an event with period life demonstrations, activities, and Civil War reenactors and historians who portray the many sides of life during a war that divided our nation. Check it out:
Civil War WeekendDiscipleship Start your home school day with prayer and Bible reading. Our Character Virtue of the month is Joy, this week focusing on Thankfulness. http://www.kidsofintegrity.com/lessons/joy has resources to help instill this character trait in your child. Math: Math Facts: Start each day with a 5 min warm up using the Math Facts Practice sheets. Please continue doing facts practice sheets daily at home until all facts are completely mastered.Mental Math: Continue your warm up with 5 minutes of Mental Math. This week work through any of MM1- 18 in the HIG appendix. Workbook Exercises: Please check these daily and have students make corrections.
Math Buddies: We encourage you to regularly use this web site to help you better understand how to teach a lesson and to provide opportunities for your child to practice new skills or review previously learned concepts that they may need extra practice with.
Reading
This week we will read and discuss the book, Freedom Train, so please bring your book to class each day. Write and score one reading narration, and return to school on Monday 11/28.
Composition
On Monday, students will be showcasing their favorite myth, of the two which they have written, to their classmates. Illustration, props, even costumes are welcome, but optional.
HistoryStudents will finish their Civil War lapbook or presentation board this week and present them to the class on Wed 11/16.
Students who are due to create a timeline figure are listed in red in the above table after the lesson number. The following class day, they will show the class the figure, tell 2-3 important points about the lesson, and place their figure on the classroom timeline.
Memory Work: Please spend 15 minutes per day working on the following memory work.
History: Memorize Key Dates from Vol. 4:
The American Revolution 1765-1783
The French Revolution 1789-1799
The Fall of Napoleon at Waterloo June 18, 1815
Karl Marx and the Communist Manifesto 1848
Charles Darwin and the Theory of Evolution 1859

Geography: This week we introduce Mexico. The song for Mexico covers seven states, but the map your child received covers all the states in Mexico. There is no song for this map. Fourth graders will be responsible for memorizing the states that border the USA, the state that includes the capital city, and those states on the Yucatan Peninsula, a frequently-visited area of Mexico that is considered to be part of the Caribbean. These are the states they will need to know for the test on January 25:- Baja California Norte
- Baja California Sur
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Coahuila
- Nuevo Leon
- Tamaulipas
- Distrito Federal
- Campeche
- Yucatan
- Quintana Roo
All maps and songs can be found here.
Scripture: Continue memorizing Proverbs 3:1-23. Additional copies may be found here.
